Hi I am Hill, as a binocular enthusiast and manufacturer, I regularly use both my HONTRY 8010G binoculars and 2 other well-known brand high-quality roof prism models.
(Cuz this is a HONTRY branded site, I can't directly disclose which brand, but I love them and I hope to one day have my products at that level of quality. And they sell for $300 and $700.)
When I first started using binoculars, I always wore my glasses. However, after some time, I noticed two issues:
Distortion: The interaction between my glasses lenses and the binocular eyepieces sometimes caused a distorted view.
Limited Field of View: Due to the exit pupil distance, I saw a smaller area when wearing glasses compared to not wearing them.
Intrigued, I decided to experiment with using binoculars without my glasses. To my surprise, the view actually improved!
I then analyzed the difference between using binoculars with and without glasses, and here's what I discovered...
Using binoculars is a breeze for people with good eyesight - just focus and enjoy the view! For those who wear glasses, it might require a few adjustments, but clear, comfortable viewing is definitely achievable.
Nearsighted or Farsighted?
<Glasses Often Optional>
Many people with nearsightedness or farsightedness can ditch their glasses while using binoculars. The built-in center focus ring acts like a temporary vision corrector, adjusting for both close and distant objects. Simply look through the binoculars and turn the dial until the image sharpens. This adjustment may not achieve perfect vision, but it should provide a clear view.
You can enjoy the world through binoculars without sacrificing your glasses. Here's Key Features:
Eye Relief: This is the crucial distance between your eye and the binoculars' eyepiece. Aim for binoculars with at least 15mm of eye relief to avoid a limited field of view or black circles around the image.
Eyecups: Choose binoculars with twist-up eyecups, commonly found in roof prism models. These offer multiple positions for easy adjustment and a comfortable fit over your glasses. Rubber eyecups provide better grip and prevent slipping.
Lens Diameter: Larger objective lenses (the front lenses) like those exceeding 40mm diameter make achieving proper eye relief easier, especially with glasses.
<When Glasses Are Necessary>
Astigmatism occurs when your cornea or lens has an irregular shape, causing blurred or distorted vision. Unlike nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism can't be corrected with the binoculars' built-in adjustments. For clear viewing, wearing your prescription glasses is essential.
Here's solution - Twist Up Eyecups for Glasses Wearers:
The gap between your glasses and the binoculars can allow light to enter and create glare. Twist Up Eyecups address this issue - They block side light for a brighter view and can improve focus.
How to Optimizing Eye Relief:
Eye relief refers to the distance between your eye and the binocular's eyepiece. Incorrect positioning can lead to a hazy view with black edges or a tunnel vision effect.
*Twist up Eyecups: Look for binoculars with adjustable eyecups that allow you to find the perfect distance for your eyes - Fold or retract the eyecups to accommodate their glasses. Your glasses will naturally create the necessary space between your eye and the lens. And you can adjust this eyecup to try different length distances over and over again until you find what you think is the best distance position. And then just follow the instructions in the manual for the rest of the operation.
In contrast, people who do not wear glasses need to pull or extend the eyecups to lengthen the distance between their eyes and the binoculars for a more unobstructed view.
My Conclusion:
People have eye defects that may need glasses to correct; however, this shouldn’t get in their way of using a binocular. It is possible to remove your glasses each time you want to use your binocular and put them back on when you’re done. But using binoculars with glasses doesn't have to be a challenge. With the right techniques and a little practice, you can achieve a comfortable and clear viewing experience.
